A wild day of healthy smiles at Melbourne Zoo

Families were treated to a fantastic day at Melbourne Zoo – complete with oral health activities!

The Oral Health Victoria Population Health team and Smile Squad joined forces once again for a fun-filled day of oral health promotion at Melbourne Zoo during the September school holidays.

Between visits to their favourite animals, children and their families stopped by to learn about the importance of looking after their teeth and maintaining bright, healthy smiles.

At the ‘drink well’ station, children got creative with arts and crafts, designing their own water bottles while learning why water is the best drink for healthy teeth.

The ‘eat well’ station provided a colourful and interactive experience, where children explored a variety of fruits and vegetables and discovered their unique colours and textures through a fun word-find activity.

At the 'clean well’ station, Chomper the puppet was a crowd favourite, teaching children how to brush their teeth properly, "up, down and all around", twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

Smile Squad also offered free dental check-ups, helping children stay on top of their oral health and reinforcing the importance of regular dental care.

We’re proud to bring free oral health care and education into community spaces where families already spend time, and the Zoo is a pretty special place to do it.

The day was a great success, with more than 185 children participating in the oral health activities and 174 children receiving a Smile Squad dental screening.
