Early years model for oral health
About the project
Oral Health Victoria is developing a statewide model to improve oral health from pregnancy through to the start of primary school. This model will adopt a population health and value-based health care approach, with a focus on prevention and early intervention.
Research shows that oral health in early childhood is closely linked to oral health later in life. Oral health also affects overall health, including conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and pregnancy complications.
The model will bring together and strengthen existing oral health promotion programs for children aged 0-5 and their families, making services more consistent and easier to access. It will be designed to connect seamlessly with Smile Squad, so children can continue to receive appropriate care and support as they start school.
The Early Learning Victoria Oral Health Pilot is one of the key activities being delivered and tested as part of this model.
By supporting healthy teeth and gums early in life, we aim to help children grow into adults with better oral and general health.
Early Learning Victoria Oral Health Pilot
Early Learning Victoria is the operator of the Victorian government-owned early learning and childcare centres rolling out across the state from 2025 - 2032. At full rollout, there will be 50 new centres, focusing on communities that need them most.
As part of the Early Years Model for Oral Health, Oral Health Victoria is working with Early Learning Victoria to deliver prevention-focused oral health activities at four pilot centres.
The pilot provides dental care and oral health promotion to young children and their families. It aims to help families build healthy habits from an early age.
