Oral cancer screening: New resource for GPs

Publish date:

We’re thrilled to empower GPs with our latest tool to boost their oral cancer screening skills.

We recently launched a new quick visual guide on oral cancer screening and referral to support general practitioners (GPs) to undertake comprehensive oral examinations, to detect oral cancer early, and to refer appropriately.

This resource was developed in consultation with oral medicine specialists and has been consumer tested by GPs across the state to ensure it is relevant and useful for general practice.

The quick visual guide includes information relating to:

  • key risk factors for oral cancer
  • steps on conducting an oral examination
  • common signs and symptoms
  • referral pathways and contacts.

Access the resource.

This new resource complements the work we do to provide professional oral health training for GPs through the Victorian Oral Cancer Screening and Prevention Program.

In November 2023, the program launched the CPD-accredited National GP Oral Cancer Learning Module via The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners' website. This training equips GPs with the necessary tools to detect oral cancer earlier. Last year, the module was integrated into a pilot project monitoring oral cancer screening in primary healthcare settings.
